Located in northern California about half way between San Francisco and Portland, pristine Siskiyou County is home to about 45,000 thousand residents and is one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the world. Sleepy towns like Mt. Shasta and Weed nestled in the foothills of Mount Shasta itself are the perfect jumping-off point to hundreds of outdoor adventures. Located at the southern end of the Cascades, this dormant volcano– the second-highest in the United States - is a playground of year-round activities including
Hiking and Backpacking - Experienced climbers can summit Mount Shasta, but there are hiking trails all through the region for any age and capability. From short hikes of less than an hour to multi-day treks that take you through several different micro-climes, the Mount Shasta area is definitely a destination for your hiking bucket list.
Fishing - Glacier-fed streams and deep mountain lakes filled with trout in this unspoiled wilderness make Siskiyou County one of the most exciting fishing getaways - it's the ultimate “secret fishing hole.” Wader, bank, and boat anglers will all find their own special spot in no time!
Mountain & Road Biking - Great trails, all to yourself! There are several mountain, valley, and river rides including loops and link trails where you might travel miles without seeing another biker. Siskiyou County is truly a haven for those who are serious about their biking, though many trails are easy enough for the casual rider, too.
Skiing - Lift tickets are typically 50 to 66% lower than popular ski resorts such as Vail and Beaver Creek - and with much shorter lines. In 2015/2016, an early bird season's pass to Mt. Shasta Ski Park was just $199 for adults, and $49 for kids under 12. Cross-country skiing, sledding, skating, and other winter sports abound too.
Driving - For those who want to see the sights from more motorized transportation, the area features many scenic drives including the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. This 500-mile All American Road winds through a history of volcanic activity in the area from Lassen Volcanic Nation Park to Crater Lake in neighboring Oregon.
